Captain Archie Gold was fishing in the James River Catfishing Club Tournament out of Hopewell Marina the evening of July 2006 and landed a new Virginia state record blue catfish. The big-un weighed in at 95.7 pounds. It was 54.5 inches long and 38.5 inches in girth. Captain Archie's blue catfish state record was broken with a 102 pound, 4 ounce blue cat caught on the James on 5/20/2009. That new state record measured 52.75 inches in length with a girth of 41.5 inches.
After all the hoopla, both big catfish were returned to the James River and was released alive and well to fight another day.
